Plaque Program
Helping homeowners recognize and celebrate the architectural and historical significance of their home.
Frequently asked questions
Does a plaque mean my home is landmarked?
No. The plaque is an educational and recognition marker only. It does not create landmark status, historic registry status, or any legal protection for the property.
Will this protect my home from demolition?
No. The plaque itself does not create any legal protection against demolition or alteration. If you are concerned about your home’s legal protection, Preservation Chicago can point you toward landmark designation resources.
Who verifies the information on the plaque?
Preservation Chicago will review key historical details — construction date, original owner or builder — before approving plaque production.
Can I suggest the wording for my plaque?
Homeowners may provide information and suggest wording, but Preservation Chicago reviews the final plaque language for consistency and accuracy before production.
Who installs the plaque?
The homeowner installs the plaque. Mounting guidance ships with it.
How much will it cost?
Homeowners will order and pay with the Bronze Memorial Company directly. Expected cost is approximately $300.
Which properties are eligible?
The pilot focuses on homes in selected historic areas of Lincoln Park with documented historic or architectural significance. Preservation Chicago sets the eligibility standards as the program develops; the home page lists the factors it weighs.home page.
My home is outside Lincoln Park. Can I still apply?
Lincoln Park is the area the pilot covers for now. Submit the form anyway — knowing where the interest is around the city is how the pilot area grows.
Will my home’s history be published online?
Yes — Preservation Chicago publishes each history as its research finishes. A house’s history comes from the public record, and the point of the program is to make it legible to everyone who passes the building. The form asks what you would like to add to it.
When will the pilot program launch?
The pilot program is now underway and accepting expressions of interest through this page.
